Ceiling light selection guide: what should you consider before buying?

As it gets dark earlier and earlier in autumn, we notice even more how much the lighting in our home matters..

A ceiling light is more than just a simple light source. It determines how bright the room is, what atmosphere welcomes you at home, and how you can use the space at different times of the day.

When making the right choice, it is worth looking beyond the design. The type and size of the light, its brightness, the colour of the light and the functions you need in everyday life are all important.

In this guide, we help you choose the right ceiling light based on type, size, light and functionality.

What type of indoor light should you choose?

The Rábalux indoor range offers several types of lighting. The right solution depends on the room where the light will be installed, the ceiling height and the role you want the lighting to play.

  • Ceiling light: Mounted directly on the ceiling, so it also works well in rooms with lower ceilings. It can provide even general lighting in a living room, bedroom, hallway or children’s room.
  • Spotlight: Provides directional light. You can use it to highlight a picture, a shelf or a specific area of the room. It can also be practical in kitchens and hallways.
  • Recessed and surface-mounted light: A clean, understated solution that fits especially well in modern interiors. For recessed lighting, it is worth planning the required space already during renovation or construction.
  • Pendant light: Looks best in spaces with higher ceilings. Above a dining table or kitchen island, it provides light while also defining the function of the area.
  • Chandelier: A decorative, eye-catching choice for rooms where lighting is an important visual element of the interior.

How large should the ceiling light be?

The size of the light affects the proportions of the room. In a large living room, a model that is too small can easily get lost. In a smaller room, an oversized light fitting can feel heavy and out of proportion.

In spacious rooms, a larger-diameter light or several coordinated light sources can work well. In smaller spaces, a more compact ceiling light is usually a better fit. With pendant lights, also pay attention to the hanging height. The light should not obstruct movement or block important parts of the room.

A pendant light above the dining table works well when it illuminates the table without causing glare. Above a kitchen island, several smaller pendant lights can be both attractive and  functionalRabaluxRabalux

What does lumen mean?

The brightness of lights is expressed in lumens. This shows how much light a lamp produces. The required brightness also depends on the size of the room, the amount of natural light, and the colours of the walls and furniture.

Light-coloured walls and furniture reflect light, making the room appear brighter. Darker surfaces absorb more light. In such rooms, stronger lighting is often needed.

The total brightness does not necessarily have to come from a single light fitting. The ceiling light can provide the general lighting, complemented by a floor lamp, wall light, table lamp or under-cabinet light.

What colour temperature should you choose?

Colour temperature describes the character of the light. It is measured in kelvins.

  • Warm white light between 2700 and 3000 K: Creates a calm, cosy atmosphere. A good choice for living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms.
  • Natural white light around 4000 K: Creates a fresher, more focused feel. It can be practical in kitchens, hallways, bathrooms and work areas.
  • Adjustable colour temperature: One light can adapt to different situations. During the day you can choose a fresher light, and in the evening a warmer shade.

Which functions can be useful?

Modern ceiling lights do more than simply illuminate a room. Some models help you adapt the light to your current activity and mood.

  • Dimmable brightness: You can adjust the light intensity to different times of the day.
  • Remote control: You can conveniently change the settings from the sofa or the bed.
  • Memory function: The light remembers the last setting you used.
  • Night mode: Provides subdued light for moving around in the evening or early morning.
  • RGB function: Coloured light can create a more atmospheric feel in a children’s room, living room or a more playful interior.
  • Wi-Fi and smart control: Some lights can also be controlled from a phone or through a compatible smart home system.

These functions offer a real advantage when they match your everyday habits. It is worth choosing the ones you will actually enjoy using in daily life.

Built-in LED or a light with a replaceable bulb?

Lights with built-in LED technology offer a modern, clean appearance. In many cases, they also include dimming, remote control or adjustable colour temperature.

With lights that use a replaceable bulb, you can choose the light source yourself. This makes it easy to adapt both the brightness and the colour of the light to your own needs.

Both solutions can be a good choice. When deciding, consider which functions you need and how much flexibility you would like to have to change the lighting later.

In the next part, we will show you how to build up your lighting room by room and which placements help make the living room, kitchen, bedroom or bathroom comfortable to use.
